Abstract

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of sex on the in vivo and carcass evaluation of lambs Corriedale. Sixty five lambs Corriedale were used, 27 castrated males and 38 females, originating from Jaguarão - RS, marketed with the specific denomination of meat quality Cordeiro Herval Premium, being slaughtered on June 14, 2004. In vivo parameters were evaluation:body weight, body length, conformation, body condition and body compacity. For the evaluation of the carcass the measures of weight of the hot carcass, fatness state and carcass yield were accomplished. The females presented better conformation and carcass yield than the castrated males, probably due to this physiologic precocity. The correlation coefficients between the body condition and the fatness state presented good indexes, demonstrating that this in vivo evaluation can be used to determine the fatness state of the carcass.
