Abstract

The taeniasis-cysticercosis complex is characterized as foodborne zoonoses, encompassing pathological changes caused by adults of Taenia solium and Taenia saginata and their larval forms. This complex is not only a public health problem, but also serious economic losses. The methods of prophylaxis of diseases involved are very simple, if compared to other parasitic diseases, but often forgotten by the people. The veterinary medical inspection post mortem is essential to control the disease, but illegal slaughtering of cattle and pigs facilitate the dissemination of this zoonotic disease, especially in countries with high poverty rates. This article aims to bring together relevant information in the literature on this topic, discussing general aspects of the etiologic agents and hosts involved, as well as diseases and their control forms.
