Consumer perception about animal welfare in Rio Verde, GO

Abstract

Two hundred questionnaires were applied in Rio Verde, GO, to investigate the consumer perception about animal welfare (AW), as well their willing to pay more for a product that respect the AW. Among the interviewed, 50.9% never had a contact with farm animals. 49.01% of them said know the animal rearing methods and 66.9% could pay more for products derived of better AW. Among the ones that would pay more, 59.5% would pay up to 3% more in relation to the price of conventional product. It was concluded that the consumer of animal origin product in Rio Verde, GO, has not contact with farm animals, however, they say know the rearing methods and could pay up to 3% more for products from rearing systems that respect the AW.
