Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the growth performance of piglets at weaning. We evaluated the performance of pigs from two farms located in the region of Rio Verde - being a farm school and an industrial farm. We analyzed five school records in the barn and 233 calving records of an industrial farm. The piglets of farms analyzed were from the cross-breeding commercial dams and sires. The piglets had access to creep with the heating source. Water was provided ad libitum since birth. The feeding of the piglets was initiated on the seventh day of age. The animals were wormed and vaccinated against swine fever, paratyphoid and mouth disease. We observed the weight of piglets at weaning and number of piglets weaned. The results were presented in graphics obtained through the chart wizard in Excel 2003. The farm school had a higher piglet weight at weaning, while the industrial farm resulted in larger number of weaned piglets, necessitating further studies to evaluate the performance of piglets at weaning.
