Abstract

Pearl millet belongs to the great family of grasses, the same genus of elephant grass, Pennisetum, and received the scientific name for Pennisetum glaucum. Able to tolerate water stress, low soil fertility (mainly low phosphorus, relatively high levels of toxic aluminum, molybdenum deficiency), low water holding capacity, low pH and high temperatures. The crop for grain production occurs in the semiarid tropics of Africa and the Indian subcontinent. West Africa is the region where millet was domesticated about 5000 years. In the Brazilian savanna is an important option in the second crop in rotation with soybeans and cotton. It has some incompatibility with the corn in relation to pests and can also occur in grasslands of the caterpillar, merely occasional and do not constitute a relevant problem, nor is host of important pests.
