Abstract

The equine herd in Brazil is a growing market and the need to produce horses with athletic ability, or even for leisure, leads to an intensification of production. The increased demand for animal creates some complications, given that they are removed from their natural habitat and confined. Among the diseases that affect horses, the second group with the highest prevalence are those associated with the respiratory tract, and the most frequent diseases are caused by bacteria, commonly found after other infections, characterizing these agents as opportunistic pathogens. Studies on these bacterial diseases are necessary to avoid economic losses in the sector. Due to the relevance of these illnesses, this review of literature has the aim of describing the two main bacterial diseases that affect the respiratory tract of young horses, explaining its features, transmission and treatment.
