The purpose of this study was to evaluate the viability of using postpartum cows as recipients of Senepol embryos. Seven hundred cows, from property Santa Teresa located in Uberlândia-MG, were used during the breeding season of 61 days, in 2006. The cows were divided into two groups: Group IA (n = 481) and TE group (n = 219). Both groups were treated with a protocol for synchronization of estrus. The Group IA was artificially inseminated on day 11 of the protocol whith Nelore semen. The Group TE received Senepol embryos on day 18 of the protocol. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed with ultrasound equipment 35 days after IA or TE. Cows diagnosed as empty were subjected to new synchronization protocols and inseminated again (Group IA) or received new embryos (group TE). There were no effects of group (P> 0.10) in the conception rate to first insemination (46.8%) or embryo transfer (41.6%), pregnancy rate at the end of the breeding season (56, 8% vs Group IA. 55.8% TE group) and the average days to get pregnant (18.30 ± 0.96 vs Group IA. 19.90 ± 1.44 Group ET). It was concluded that calving cows can be used as embryo recipients without loss of reproductive efficiency, and may bring an increase in profitability of the activity.
