Abstract

The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of using the meter backfat thickness (BT) on live pigs. The survey was conducted in the Swine Breeding Section of the Instituto Federal Goiano – Campus Rio Verde. Were evaluate 41 male pigs weighing 26 at 290 kg and age from 72 to 678 days. Was observed in females weight from 31 to 306 kg and age from 82 to 1785 days. The BT was measured with ultrasound equipment Model MTU-100. The measurement of BT was performed in two points to 5 cm laterally to the backbone. After applying the gel on the transducer was placed perpendicular to the skin surface, pressing to obtain a constant reading on the device display. The comparison between the live weight of pigs, age and BT was performed by the correlation function in the program in Excel 2003. The meter backfat thickness proved to be an effective tool in the evaluation of carcass quality in live pigs. Since the weight and age was positively correlated with backfat thickness.
