Antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella spp. strains isolated from poultry farms

Abstract

Currently there is a growing concern about increasing antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic microorganisms transmitted by food. Among them, stand out bacteria from the genus Salmonella, the main etiologic agents of outbreaks of foodborne diseases. We analyzed 37 samples of Salmonella from poultry farms in Uberlândia, MG, Brazil, to evaluate the profile of antimicrobial susceptibility. The model of susceptibility was determined by disc diffusion using 14 antibiotics. The samples had, in general, sensitivity to most antibiotics tested. However, some strains showed a tendency toward resistance to penicillin G (100%) and tetracycline (29.73%). Thirteen samples (35,14%) showed multidrug resistance to two or more antimicrobials, and resistance to tetracycline and penicillin the most prevalent (29.73%). One sample was resistant to seven of the 14 tested antibiotics. The results support the conclusion that despite the strains mostly present a profile of high sensitivity to the antibiotics tested, showing the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains, which requires constant vigilance in poultry production.
