Abstract

Bovine cysticercosis is caused by Cysticercusbovis in its middle stage of the cycle. Contamination occurs due to ingestion of water or pasture contaminated byTaeniasaginataeggs (cause of human taeniasis). Once this is a zoonotic disease of significant occurrence, it becomes important to study and monitor the epidemiological data for effective control practices. Animals that had viable (alive) or degenerated (calcified) cysts were considered positive for cysticercosis. From August/2009 to July/2010, data of 2950 animals infested with viable cysticerci (98.96%) were observed, including 2075 animals with cysts in the head (70.34%), followed by 947 with C. bovis in the heart (32.1%). In the same period, only 31 animals were observed only with calcified cysticerci (1.04%), approximately 22 animals with cysts in the heart (70.97%), followed by nine in the head (29.03%). Considering the importance of taeniasis and thatcattle is the intermediate host and essential in the cycle of transmission of zoonosis, the results contribute to the formulation of measures to control bovine cysticercosis.
