Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the use of probiotics in the levels of lactose in milk. In the experiment we used 20 Jersey cows, divided into five groups with four animals each.  As control, a sample of milk were collected from each animal and sent to the laboratory for analysis of levels of lactose in the milk before adding the probiotic in food. The feeding of the cows consisted of 6.5 kilograms of commercial diet per day, cottonseed, sugarcane, ammonium sulfate and urea. After the first analysis, the probiotic was added for 60 days and four analysis of milk from each animal were made at intervals of 15 days. It was concluded that, despite several beneficial effects caused by probiotics in ruminants, there were not obtained changes in the levels of lactose in milk of those cows that received probiotics in their diet.
