Abstract

The induced molting has been broadly used in the poultry industry, because is a really effective method towards to extend the laying birds’ productivity, bringing a better internal and external quality in the eggs. However, between the several methods of induced molting exists a practice who involves the subjection of laying hens to a fasting that could last several days, and this practice is really common mainly in developing countries. The molt by fasting has not been admitted by some members of the society due the negative effects that this method could cause on well-being of the birds. In this context, this study will approach the topics: end of the production cycle from laying hens; the forced molting in agricultural sector; the goal from induced molting, the origin and methods of this practice, the welfare and the five freedoms; the forced molting and consumer perspective.
