Abstract

Two groups cultured and native of the spotted catfish were studied with Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA markers. The aim of this paper is to assess a possible genetic variability loss in the cultured group if compared to native one. The population parameters analyzed, Fst, genetic distance, heterogeneity and genetic similarity revealed important differences between the groups, a strong reduction in genetic variability with great genetic similarity within the cultured group. The causes and the implications of such reduction to fisheries, conservation and aquaculture are discussed.
