Comparative study of spinal administration of lidocaine or bupivacaine in Red-footed Tortoise Chelonoidis carbonaria (Spix, 1824)

Abstract

The turtles are present in the Testudinata order. As the turtles are becoming more common in captivity, the number of veterinary care is growing every day. Therefore, this study evaluated the lidocaine (2%) and the bupivacaine (0.5%) efficacy of spinal in red-footed tortoiseChelonoidis carbonaria. Were used 20 animals divided into two groups, from the LAPAS-UFU squad, one used a 4.6 mg/kg of lidocaine (2%), and the another group 1.15 mg/kg of bupivacaine (0.5%), in both groups were used a 0.2 ml of volume per 5 cm of carapace. The evaluated parameters were the promotion of sensory and motor block in the regions of tail and pelvic members, and the differences in the effects of the both drugs. The results shows that the technique of spinal anesthesia is safe and effective, the anesthetic drugs have proven safe in the promotion of spinal anesthesia in Chelonoidis carbonaria, and the anesthetic timely is sufficient and can be used as an alternative anesthetic quite efficient for routine surgical procedures. The time of the bupivacaine (0.5%) effect on the tail/cloaca was higher.
