Abstract

The fauna is a set of animal species from a particular country or region, both wild and domesticated. In general, the fauna is considered as a true wealth for humanity, for its remarkable ecological, scientific, economic and cultural value. Regrettably, a large part of society does not recognize in a deserved way the magnitude of its values. In this sense, this work sought to analyze the management of fauna seized by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Resources - IBAMA, to identify the main groups of animals seized and the destination of the animals seized and rehabilitated, in the municipality of Imperatriz, Southwest region of the State of Maranhão, Brazil, in the period from 2009 to 2011. In this period, 1257 animals were reported, where in 2009 there were entries of 357 animals, in 2010, 401 animals and in 2011, 499 animals were admitted to IBAMA. Of the total of 1257 animals, 498 were of the Class Aves, 328 of the Class Mammalia and 431 of Class Reptilia. Of the six Orders of Reptiles seized, the most outstanding in relation to the quantity of specimens seized was the Squamata Order with 55,5% (234 individuals). It is concluded that most of the fauna seized was of the Class Aves, among them the Psittaciformes Order that was the most outstanding in relation to the number of seizures. Another factor in relation to the trafficking or domestication of wild animals is the disinformation of the population, taking into account the culture of the wild animal as a pet.
