Abstract

Milk production in intensively managed tropical pastures has shown a promising alternative, due to high yields of tropical forages. However, the intensive management of these forages gives them high levels of crude protein, high degradability, associated with low levels of non-fiber carbohydrates. It interferes in the rumen, efficiency of nutrient utilization and animal production. The aim of this review was to evaluate strategies for manipulating the rumen of dairy cows in intensive grazing. In this context, energy supplementation with non-fiber carbohydrates seems to be the most appropriate strategy, but further studies are needed to understand the optimal intake of supplement at each level of production.
