Abstract

The dynamic character of animal welfare in dairy farming is a useful attribute for the planning, management and evaluation of animal production systems. However, this is an aspect that is still underdeveloped and rarely considered in part due to the lack of dynamic indicators. This work proposes resilience as a dynamic indicator of animal welfare for use in dairy cattle protocols. Resilience is the animal's ability to cope with disturbances over time and recover its initial state of welfare after suffering from a disturbance. We present a method to operationalize the resilience of animal welfare through system dynamics modeling to calculate the indices: hardness, robustness, elasticity, recover rapidity, and resilience index. The resilience indices simulated with the computational model, as an example, showed the adequacy of the resilience as a dynamical indicator of animal welfare. The values of resilience indices obtained were adherents to the intrinsic concepts of animal welfare and give a set of useful information to compare the dynamic state of animal welfare in different situations and scenarios.
