Abstract

The intestinal parasites are among the pathogens most commonly found in pets and are a more cause of intestinal disorders in dogs. They are responsible for apathy, decreased performance, anemia, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, anal itching, seizures and death. In addition to the direct action of the parasite, the host can acquire severe enteritis and pneumonia due to secondary bacterial infection. This symptomatology occurs in young animals, while adult dogs usually keep the parasitic asymptomatic, but may be transmitted to offspring and man. This paper analyzes enteroparasites affecting dogs in the city of Apodi, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. We analyzed 60 samples of dog feces collected from January to December 2008 and examined using the technique of Willis, Sheather and Hoffmann. In enteroparasites were observed Ancylostoma spp., Dipylidium caninum, Toxocara canis and Trichuris vulpis. In enteroparasites association with more than one parasite, were found: Ancylostoma spp. + T. canis and Ancylostoma spp. + Trichuris vulpis. These results suggest the need for parasite control of dogs in this region to reduce the risk of zoonoses.
