Abstract

Botulism is a severe illness caused by botulinum toxins Clostridium, which should be considered as emergency medical and public health. The aim of this study was to report the case of type C botulism in ducks (Cairina moshata) associated with the consumption of contaminated mud and insects. Public park in the forest eco-called Ipe, place of visitation rather located in the city of Uberaba, Minas Gerais, a duck (Carina moshata) adult began to show clinical signs compatible botulism, this animal died and forwarded to the Department of Animal Pathology of the Veterinary Hospital of Uberaba. He was in good body condition, showing the characteristic triad for botulism: soft neck, down feathers and drooping wings. At postmortem examination had been found mud mixed larvae of insects in the crop and gizzard, from the shores of the lake, where the animals lived, swam and drank water from there, other birds started showing clinical signs and died at same location, at an interval of 11 hours, approximately 20 birds. The content found in the gizzard and ingluvies were sent to the Laboratory of Immunology, Federal University of Uberlandia, for bioassay in mice, and ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay). To this end, were inoculated mice with botulinum antitoxins types A, B, C, D and E originated from the Pasteur Institute (Paris), noting the presence of botulinum toxin type C, confirming the diagnosis of botulism. With respect to incubation period and severity of clinical signs depend on the dose, in analyzing the clay found in ingluvies birds, and the presence of insect larvae probably found the source on toxin poisoning of birds to ingest the these toxins were released during the digestion of them falling and immediately absorbed into the bloodstream and subsequently reaching the endplate located in muscles, inhibiting the action of acetylcholine, preventing muscle contraction. So the birds died paralyzed because his muscles were relaxed, even those that assist in breathing, and death by respiratory arrest. We conclude that botulism is acquired in numerous sources of contamination, the ducks can say that there is an occurrence of this disease in Brazil, should be diagnosed quickly to avoid cases of mass death.
