Abstract

The demodicosis is also known as demodectic mange, follicular mange or red mange. It is caused by the mite Demodex canis, a burrowing mite, which is located in the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. The transmission occurs from mother to newborn infants through direct contact. The demodicosis may be localized or generalized, juvenile or adult. In the diagnosis is made use of skin scrapings, and biopsy culture and sensitivity. In the treatment drugs are used as amitraz and milbemycin and avermectin. Recovered patients should not be used as breeders.
