Abstract

Neurodegenerative diseases have a strong impact, both economic and social. Unfortunately, little is known about the mechanisms triggering these diseases, as well as efficient ways to combat them. However, in recent years, strong evidence has suggested the use of flavonoids as curative method and/or palliative, aiming to improve the quality of life of patients with these diseases. Chemically, flavonoids are polyphenolic structures characterized as low molecular weight, water soluble and present in the vacuoles of plant cells. Although their antibacterial propriety, antifungal and antiviral are well known, few review papers have demonstrated the action and importance of these substances in the brain. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the possible pharmacological applications of flavonoids in the central nervous system, highlighting the importance of using these substances for the treatment of many different disorders that affect this system.
