Abstract

Changes in quality and quantity of the primary components of the tear can change the dynamics and compromise the functionality of the tear film which is composed of lipids, an aqueous fraction and mucoproteins. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a disease frequently diagnosed in dogs, characterized by the inability of the aqueous fraction or layer of mucin or lipid tear film, resulting in inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea, pain and reduced vision, taking the test Schirmer tear as the primary means of diagnosis. Treatment usually is guided in the use of lacrimoestimulants and lacrimomimetics in addition to antibacterials.
