Abstract

The objective of this study was to review the use of the technique of ultrasonography (US) in breeding beef cattle. Discusses the importance of the characteristics measured by the US in the composition of edible quality and volume of the carcasses, characteristics measurements by US: ribeye area (AOL), fat rump and subcutaneous fat (EG), fat thickness at P8 also known as croup (EGP8) and occasionally is measured percent intramuscular fat (GIM) or marbling. We conducted a brief history of the art, including Brazil, highlighting its main advantages and disadvantages compared with other assessment techniques phenotype animal-specific carcass traits. The details of measurement, operation of equipment, investments for the producer and the technical as well as appropriate age to perform the measurements on animal and other information indispensable the field of information published about the subject.
