Abstract

This study aimed to assess the cost of production of smallholder dairy farming in Colorado do Oeste - RO. The experiment was conducted in four properties in the period March to August 2013, these being assisted by government agencies of County properties. The information was obtained through visits to properties and completion of questionnaires containing questions with elaborate dairy herd, infrastructure, implements Property, milk production, marketing and management. It was found that 38 % of dairy cows are producing profit, while 62 % of dairy cows are only generating expenses without producing milk. Analyzing the economics of dairy farming in the city of Colorado do Oeste - RO, it became evident that the farmer management conditions deployed today in their properties, does not generate significant profit from this activity. There is then a need to increase the percentage of cows in milk, so the number of animals contributing only with the expenditure would be lower and the total lactating animals outweigh the rest, then giving profit to the producer
