Abstract

The native vegetation of the caatinga constitutes an important food resource for the herds of the Brazilian semiarid region. In this type of vegetation, the Euphorbiaceae Family is represented by a large number of species, characterized by a high productive and nutritional potential of their forage. However, the lack of managerial information causes problems of forage waste in the rainy season and animal intoxication by substances present in the plants, and studies are needed to minimize such problems. Thus, this review was aimed at discussing the botanical family Euphorbiaceae, highlighting its economic importance and the use of some native species of the caatinga in animal feed, showing the forms of use and characterizing the productive, chemical and nutritional aspects of forages as well as compounds toxins present in these plants.
