Abstract

Cottonseed has been widely used in ruminant feed and has generated great interest, especially to be important source of energy and protein replacing to forage and by low cost. Despite being used in ruminant feed, cottonseed has an anti-nutritional factor, named as gossypol, which can cause toxicity mainly to young animals, which have generated some resistance to their use on nutrition of these animals. In Brazil, several studies have evaluated the effect of gossypol contained in cottonseed on the daily dry matter intake, weight gain and feed efficiency. Although there are a large number of research related to the use of cottonseed in ruminant nutrition, there is no agreement on the maximum gossypol security on the diet of these animals. Thus, in order to demonstrate the effect of gossypol on reproductive performance, this review shows some researches in dairy cattle, and will have great importance for the generation of knowledge in the development of different nutritional management in which the levels of inclusion of cottonseed on the diet are such that they cannot cause impairment on the reproductive performance of ruminants.
