Abstract

The purpose of this literature review was to gather articles and literature about canine megaesophagus, addressing this condition in a solid and clear way, so that veterinarians have a concise theoretical reference on such pathology. Megaesophagus is a disorder of esophageal motility that can be of primary or secondary cause, with regurgitation being the main clinical aspect. Most animals show regurgitation soon after feeding and when not diagnosed and treated progress to progressive weight loss and malnutrition, respiratory signs are frequent due to aspiration pneumonia resulting from esophageal hypomotility. The diagnosis is made through imaging exams in association with clinical signs and an anamnesis, the prognosis is reserved since conservative treatment is not always effective.
