Abstract

Renal carcinoma (CR) is a malignant neoplasm originating from the renal tubular epithelium. This type of cancer is rare and usually affects middle-aged male dogs. Clinical signs are nonspecific and may resemble other diseases and this makes the diagnosis made by imaging (ultrasound and X-ray), exploratory and histopathological laparotomy for confirmation. Nephrectomy is suggested for treatment in cases of unilateral renal carcinoma and chemotherapy but does not show an increase in patient survival. This paper aims to report the case of an 8-year-old dog who was treated due to signs of heart disease and on return presented signs such as emesis, anorexia, and abdominal pain. Ultrasound examination was performed, where a 7 cm structure was identified on the left side, X-ray examination, and subsequent exploratory laparotomy followed by nephrectomy. The material collected and sent for histopathology confirmed well-differentiated renal carcinoma, papillary pattern. After diagnosis, the patient was referred to a veterinary oncology specialist who, according to the results of the tests performed again, chose not to enter the chemotherapy treatment.
