Characterization and management of Amazonia´s native pastures

Abstract

The native pastures of seasonally flooded or well-drained savannas, constitute important pastoral systems and should continue performing a prominent paper in the development of the livestock farming of the Amazonia. Despite of fragile ecosystems, ecologically are more stable, since submitted to adequate management practical. The establishment of a more competitive livestock farming in the region requires the adoption of an assembly of measures that make feasible the exploitation livestock farming, assuring its social, environmental, economic, and agronomic sustainability. The selection of forage germoplasm more productive and adapted to the ecological conditions of the region; the utilization of adequate soil (liming and fertiization) and pasture management practices (stocking rate, grazing system, mixture with forage legumes, stockpiled); the integration between the native pastures and cultivated and the sanitary and reproductive management of the herds are practical that can contribute of significant form for the increase of the competitiveness of the livestock farming, reconciling animal productivity with environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
