Abstract

The present clinical report deals with the diagnosis and nephrectomy of a male dog, of mixed breed, who presented injuries due to bites by another dog. The dog underwent physical and biochemical examinations and showed changes in urinalysis and blood count, indicating the presence of eggs of the parasite Dioctophyma renale. On abdominal ultrasound image examination, the presence of adult parasites of D. renale was suggested in the right kidney, which presented with acute nephropathy. The dog underwent a surgical procedure for nephrectomy, identifying the presence of two adult worms from D. renales. The parenchyma of the affected right kidney was totally destroyed, being reduced to the capsule. The dog was debilitated and died 48 hours after the surgical procedure.
