Abstract

Obesity is a pathological condition characterized by an accumulation of fat that is greater than necessary in the body, capable of impairing good health and animal welfare. It can occur as a consequence of the overload of carbohydrate and fat supply, exceeding daily energy expenditure, castration, sedentary lifestyle, as well as endocrine and genetic problems. This variation in the epidemiology of obesity has contributed to a greater difficulty in identifying the primary cause of the disease. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to present the epidemiological and clinical aspects, the methods available for the diagnosis of obesity and some forms of treatment.
