Abstract

A dog's diet plays a crucial role in determining its health, quality of life, and life expectancy. Historically, canine nutrition has been dominated by industrially processed dog foods, which are mass-produced and sold globally. However, in the last few decades, there has been a growing trend towards natural feeding, which has been hailed for its nutritional advantages and health benefits. This move towards natural feeding has raised pertinent questions about its effectiveness compared to industrially processed dog foods. Our overall objective, therefore, is to analyze the influence and implications of natural feeding on the health and well-being of dogs. This study poses the following research question: What are the main differences, in terms of health, quality of life, and life expectancy, between dogs that are naturally fed and those that consume industrially processed dog foods? This study consists of a literature review, with the aim of consolidating available knowledge on the topic. The inclusion criteria covered studies published in the last ten years, available in databases such as Google Scholar and Scielo, in Portuguese and free of charge. The search descriptors used were "natural canine feeding", "industrially processed dog food", "canine health", and "canine life expectancy". The reviewed studies indicated that natural feeding could provide superior digestibility, better fecal quality, and potential reduction of food allergies compared to industrially processed dog foods. Moreover, it was observed that naturally fed dogs tend to have better body condition and longer life expectancy. However, it was also evident that adopting natural feeding requires adequate knowledge to ensure that all nutritional needs are met, avoiding deficiencies or excesses that may compromise the animal's health. Natural feeding, when well-balanced and planned, can bring numerous health benefits to dogs. However, it is essential that pet owners seek appropriate guidance to ensure a complete and balanced diet. Although industrially processed dog food offers convenience, transitioning to a more natural diet, grounded in research and scientific studies, can be beneficial for canine well-being and longevity.
