Abstract

This study aimed to assess the level of students’ knowledge from the first to the ninth semester of Veterinary Medicine Course on the term’s biotechnology, bioethics and biosafety. For composition of the sample survey, seventy-five students participated in the activity proposal being evaluated with a questionnaire containing 10 closed questions. As a result, we had to seventy-five students evaluated on the issue 01 (Q1) on questions related to bioethics, there was no statistically significant difference comparing the averages of each period, however, there were a highest number of hits in the second period. In question 02 (Q2) 78.67% responded yes and 21.33% no to the term bioethics related to animal welfare, showing statistical difference comparing the responses. In question 03 (Q3) to evaluate the bioethics teaching in the university, there was a difference between semesters analyzed. For question 04 (Q4) 73.33% responded yes as to the existence of any related discipline and 26.67% responded not with statistical difference between the semesters. Analyzing the answers obtained in question 05 (Q5) there was no statistically significant difference comparing the averages of each period on themes explored. The question 06 (Q6) which deals with the knowledge of patents, 80% admitted having no knowledge and 20% admitted knowledge about the subject. This result showed statistical difference by comparing the average values between the lines yes and no; in issue 07 (Q7) 53.33% of respondents had not known about the principle of 3R'se 46.67% said they were aware, but there was no difference in the average values between the lines yes and no. The question 08 (Q08) on the perception of biotechnology, showed no statistical difference between the periods. Through the evaluation of the question 09 (Q09) 66.67% of the responders said they participated in some practice of experimentation, among them 8% put that there was no application of the practice of biosafety and 33.33% (25/75) did not participate. The last issue 10 (Q10) related to biotechnology, there was no statistically significant difference comparing the averages of each period. The Veterinary Medicine course students have knowledge below the desired about bioethical terms, biosafety and biotechnology.
