Abstract

The Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is a seabird that has presented a reduction in the number of individuals in natural colonies, so it is important to collect information on parasitosis and other pathologies, which may affect this species, as well as the integration of conservation initiatives. The objective of this study was to evaluate the helminth fauna of Magellanic Penguins, body condition score and macroscopic lesions in animals collected on the coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Postmortem examinations of 41 specimens of Magellanic Penguins were performed, with a prevalence of 82.9% (34/41) of penguins parasitized by at least one helminth species. All penguins were young and 95.1% (39/41) had a poor run, 24.4% (10/41) were good and 4.9% (2/41) were regular. Among the positive ones, 29.4% (10/34) contained some type of anthropogenic residue in the stomach and only 2,9% (1/34) had oil stain on the feathers.
