Abstract

The present study aimed to quantify the main macroscopic findings observed during the ovariohysterectomy (OH) procedure in bitches and female cats, comparing the occurrence of reproductive disorders in castrated species. The castrations took place in a “castramobile bus”, which traveled through the cities of Campinas-SP, Hortolândia-SP, Barueri-SP, Salto-SP, São José do Rio Preto-SP, Santana de Parnaíba-SP and Curitiba-PR, in the period from November 16, 2020 to February 8, 2021. 5267 animals were castrated, of which 3173 were female. The OH was held in 1772 bitches and 1401 female cats. Macroscopic changes were observed in 239 females (7.5%), 107 in bitches (44.76%) and 132 cats (55.23%), with pyometra, hydrometra, breast tumor and malformations as more frequent macroscopic changes. Such changes highlight the importance of cities adopting castration programs, regardless of the species, since this is the most efficient method both for the prevention and treatment of reproductive diseases, as well as for the population control of companion animals. In addition to the implementation of public policies aimed at birth control of dogs and cats, it is also important to raise guardian’s awareness of responsible guardianship and the consequences of allowing animals to remain uncastrated (or whole) and semi-domiciled.
