Abstract

The aim of this case report was to report a multimodal anesthetic procedure with dexmedetomidine infusion performed on a dog, SRD, 10 months old, for ovariosalpinghysterectomy (OSH) surgery. As pre-anesthetic mediation protocol, dexmedetomidine 2 mcg/kg/IM, ketamine 1mg/kg/IM and methadone 0.1 mg/kg/IM were used. After 10 minutes, the patient was taken to the surgical center with an intravenous access, where induction was performed with propofol 3 mg/kg/IV and maintained with dexmedetomidine infusion at a dose of 0.5 mcg/kg/min, and inhalation anesthesia with isoflurane in a universal vaporizer. During the entire procedure, the parameters evaluated were heart rate, systolic pressure, respiratory rate, peripheral blood oxygen saturation, partial pressure of carbon dioxide at the end of expiration, blood glucose and temperature. The assessment was carried out every 5 minutes, with the exception of blood glucose, which was assessed at four different times, pre-anesthetic, initiation, trans-operative and immediate post-operative. The undesirable effects of dexmedetomidine are dose-dependent. The changes in physiological parameters measured during the procedure were minimal and excellent abdominal relaxation was observed during the procedure, in addition to excellent trans- and post-surgical analgesia. Therefore, the infusion of dexmedetomidine at the utilized dose (0.5 mcg/kg/min) can be a safe tool in the anesthetic procedure, in addition to promoting rapid recovery and efficient postoperative analgesia.
