Pleuropneumonia associated with transport in a Quarter Horse: Case report

Abstract

It is a fact that the transport of horses has been one of the risk factors most associated with the development of pleuropneumonia, because there is great stress experienced by these animals during boarding, travel and disembarking, leading to a drop in immunity. The respiratory system of athletic horses is one of the most important, since it affects their performance. The objective of this work was to report a case treated at the Federal University of Mato Grosso’s Hovet, in Cuiabá. The animal arrived with a history of pleuropneumonia after being transported over a long distance and with recurrences of the disease, even with treatment. To confirm the diagnosis and analyze the current clinical condition, laboratory and imaging tests were performed, including a blood count, biochemical profile, cytology, culture, antibiogram and chest ultrasound, indicating the presence of chronic pleuropneumonia. Therapy was performed with broad-spectrum and antibiogram-based antimicrobials, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, mucolytics, and supportive care. After 29 days of treatment, he presented remission of symptoms and pleural fluid, and was ready for hospital discharge. Pleuropneumonia has a poor prognosis, depending on the severity of the condition and speed of the decision-making. The success of the case is due to the correct diagnosis and assertive therapeutic approaches, resulting in a good prognosis.
