Abstract

Distichiasis is considered the most common alteration in canine eyelashes, with greater predisposition in brachycephalic breeds, due to their anatomy. This condition can occur unilaterally or bilaterally, in the upper and/or lower eyelid, with higher prevalence in the upper lid in this study only. Characterized by the production of extra eyelashes in the tarsal plate, emerging at the margin of the eyelid through the free orifices near the Meibomian gland, and coming into direct contact with the cornea. The cornea is an area of high sensitivity, susceptible to injuries and ulcerations by these distichiae, and their removal is necessary. This study was carried out with seven dogs of different breeds, aiming to present an alternative approach to mechanical epilation, performing the removal of eyelashes through electrocautery via surgical laser, showing this technique’s advantages and whether it was effective in relation to the treatment.
