Ozone therapy and photobiomodulation in a wound caused by cutaneous loxoscelism in a dog: Case report

Abstract

Loxosceles sp. or brown spider, is one of the most dangerous spiders within the scope of Brazilian Veterinary Medicine. Poisoning by this arachnid, called loxoscelism, is more common in dogs and its cutaneous form can lead to extensive dermonecrosis. Considering the relevance of effective therapies for the treatment of loxoscelism, the goal of this paper was to present a case report of an integrative treatment with ozone and photobiomodulation in a wound caused by cutaneous loxoscelism in a dog. The treatment proposed employing ozone therapy and photobiomodulation showed significant improvement in the skin condition by accelerating the tissue repair process in the dermonecrosis region. The synergy promoted by both ozone and photobiomodulation therapies has already been demonstrated in the treatment of numerous other veterinary clinical conditions. Besides, the signs presented and the fast diagnosis, based on the loxoscelic poisoning and prompt intervention with integrative therapies, were fundamental for the successful clinical outcome of the case. This case report provides new insights into therapeutic strategies for canine cutaneous loxoscelism, considering the quick resolution of the dermonecrotic process.
