Abstract

This study aims to report a case of surgical correction of an otohematoma in a male pig, Piau, one year old, weighing 70 kg, in a rural property in the city of Barra, Bahia. The otohematoma is a pathological alteration that has as its main characteristic the large accumulation of floating blood in the concave region of the pinna, which can be caused by trauma, sudden movements or caused by inflammation, tumors or polyps in the ear canal; it is diagnosed mainly through general and specific physical examination. It occurs in the swine species, but has been little reported in the literature, and there are more reports directed to other species. The animal reported was intended to be used as a breeder, had a history of pain incidence, discomfort in the left ear and had reduced food intake. During the clinical examination, it was observed that the physiological parameters were normal for the species. In the specific examination, through palpation, it was identified the presence of content between the epithelial and cartilaginous surface of the left ear and scars caused by drainage attempts made by the keeper previously. Based on the analysis, the diagnosis of otohematoma was confirmed, and it was treated by surgical intervention, draining the content present, with subsequent use of cap suture. We could conclude that the correction of the otohematoma was successfully performed, providing a better quality of life for the animal, which resumed its normal activities.
