Abstract

Ionophores can manipulate rumen fermentation and increase feed efficiency, increasing the animal performance. And the com from fermentation arising from some Streptomyces species. Ionophores are classified as substances able to passively interact with ions and cations, acting in this way, as a transport vehicle for them through cellular membranes. Currently, some types of ionophore are known, standing Monensina, Salinomicyn, Lasalocida and Narasina. The objective of this review was to approach the results presented in the literature on the use of ionophores and other additives in the ruminal nutrition, and to clarify their role in ruminal fermentation, consumption, digestion and practical applications in production systems.
