Abstract

Deficit in veterinary neonatology is conspicuous. It is known that the canine mortality rate is up to 30% in the first weeks of life. Despite several peculiarities of puppies and kittens physiology, clinical drug therapy in neonatology can be encompassed in three main topics: a) support therapy and intensive care, which includes oxygen therapy, thermoregulation, nutrition and hydroelectrolitic and acid-base balance; b) anti-parasites therapy of external parasites and the internal parasites; bacterial infection control. The professional must have knowledge and perform a thorough clinical examination to be able to identify some changes. All these collaborate to reduce the neonatal mortality in the first weeks of life.
