Abstract

  1. The beneficial effects of the fertilization with silicon have been researched in several species, among them the sugarcane. As Brazil is a great producer of waste and that if improperly discarded might contaminate soils and waters, one of the alternatives found to solve this problem is to be using this waste in agriculture, as has been demonstrated that the use of steel slag positively influences nutrient concentrations and silicon in soil and crop cane sugar. The high sucrose content in mature plant, just at a time of year when the pastures are scarce and deficient in protein and energy, makes sugarcane an important energy source for cattle during the dry season.
