Cumulative copper poisoning in sheep: a review

Abstract

With the expansion of sheep production, the intensification of production systems has increased the incidence of various diseases, and copper poisoning which show a high frequency. The copper poisoning can be acute, resulting from the ingestion of high amounts of copper, or cumulative, also called chronic, result from the ingestion moderate amounts of copper for a long period of time before the onset of clinical signs of the disease. This review discusses the pathogenesis of cumulative copper poisoning, as well as clinical signs that are manifested in the various stages of the disease, alterations in laboratory tests results, necropsy alterations, and how to establish the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and its control.
