Abstract

Forty-two ejaculates were collected in an artificial vagina (A.V.), Hannover model, modified by a device in inverted “Y” shape, whose edges flowed into cups, one at room temperature and the other one cooled at 22 ± 1ºC. The better motility of the ejaculate portion collected into the cooled cup compared to the ejaculate collected into the cup at room temperature was sustained after processing the cooled semen (6 ±1ºC) at all subsequent moments of analysis (24, 48 and 72 hours). Comparing to the collection with the conventional cup, the collection with the cooled cup has made it possible to use 38.9% more of the ejaculate, considering the parameter of 40% minimum motility required for its use in equine semen cooling programs. Having in mind the obtained results, the collection of equine semen into an artificial vagina equipped with a collector cup cooled at 22 ± 1ºC temperature is recommended.
