Abstract

Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis is a disease of great public health importance, regarding that  is a zoonososis  that has been taken alarming proportions, due to the urbanization of the disease, the difficulties in controlling vectors and reservoirs, and the challenge of public awareness and preparedness of health professionals in diagnosing it; and in cases of the disease in humans, to treat it. Actually the biggest concern is with regard to early diagnosis of disease and the elimination not only of canine reservoirs, but also of the vectors. Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis is part of a diseases group of greatest public health concern, with the character of compulsory notification to the Zoonosis Governmental Department and, once the animal is diagnosed as positive, has the legal sacrifice as required. This disease could had a chronic evolution and can cause death in immunosuppressed individuals and children if not diagnosed early and treated appropriately.
