Abstract

The present study aimed to improve fecal cytology as a more accessible and less invasive diagnostic method. Fecal samples from 14 dairy cows were collected at three 28-day intervals via digital rectal examination and processed immediately. The technique consisted of adapting an otological smear using a sterile swab rolled onto glass slides, followed by Rapid Panoptic or May-Grünwald Giemsa staining. The adapted method proved functional when thin smears were prepared, with clearer visualization when using Rapid Panoptic staining. This approach may be useful in settings with limited resources, although interpretation requires expertise due to fecal debris. Fecal cytology shows potential as a screening tool in veterinary medicine, and further studies are needed for refinement and validation.
