Resumo

O presente trabalho trata-se de um referencial teórico com finalidade de analisar as mais recentes publicações científicas sobre epilepsia em animais de companhia, a fim de considerar aspectos atuais e clássicos da doença, principalmente nos aspectos clínico, diagnóstico e terapêutico, bem como terminologia proposta e formas de classificação das diversas apresentações da doença. O método escolhido para tal foi a busca de publicações com as palavras-chave epilepsy cats dogs, epilepsy cats, seizure cats, seizure cat dog e international veterinary epilepsy task force na plataforma PubMed e posterior análise dos resultados obtidos para elaboração do referencial teórico. Também foram consideradas publicações realizadas anteriormente quando citadas pelos autores da literatura principal deste trabalho, quando consideradas relevantes para a presente discussão.  Finalmente, considera-se a evolução técnico-científica no campo da Medicina Veterinária ao buscar estabelecer condutas específicas para cães e gatos, bem como para as diferentes apresentações da doença, ainda que permaneça alguma carência de maior precisão de dados e protocolos específicos para cada espécie e apresentação da epilepsia.
