Abstract

The effects of plant age (14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days) on dry matter (DM) yield, morphogenetic characteristics and regrowth of Brachiariabrizantha cv. Marandu were evaluated in a cutting trial carried out at Vilhena, Rondônia. The experiment was conducted in a clayey Red-Yellow Latosol with low fertility. DM yields and the leaf area index (LAI) increased consistently with growth stage, however, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and potassium contents, absolute and relative growth rates, and leaf elongation rate decreased as plant age. Maximum DM yield and LAI were obtained, respectively, at 38.6 and 37.8 days. Apical meristem removing percentage increased with plant age. Aftermath regrowth showed close negative correlation with survival of apical meristems. These data suggest that grazing or cutting at 35 to 42 days were optimal for obtain maximum yields of rich forage and better pasture regrowth.
