Abstract

Splenic hemangiosarcoma is one of the most common neoplasms in canine species., The highest prevalence of the tumor occurs in elderly dogs and large breeds. The neoplasm may present with hyporexia, apathy, anemia and may result in tumor rupture. The definitive diagnosis is made by histopathological examination. For the treatment of splenic hemangiosarcoma, splenectomy associated with antineoplastic chemotherapy is indicated. The objective of this study was to report a case of a 10-year-old male, neutered, mixed-breed, large-sized canine animal, which presented some symptoms such as hyporexia, apathy, abdominal distension and sensitivity, petechiae, in addition to present hematological alterations such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis due to neutrophilia and ultrasound alterations such as the presence of a nodule in the splenic region of approximately 9.6cm x 7.2cm. for performing total splenectomy., Tumor fragments were referred for histopathological analysis with a definitive diagnosis of splenic hemangiosarcoma., This case report allows us to highlight the need for a rapid diagnostic approach and to carry out the therapeutic intervention immediately, as it can contribute in the prognosis of the animal.
